Job: Disturbance Analysis Engineer - Calgary, Alberta CANADA

An opportunity currently exists for a Disturbance Analysis Engineer in the Disturbance Analysis team within System Operations. The successful candidate will be accountable for the collection of power system data, analyzing Transmission system disturbances and managing the mitigation of deficiencies and/or improvements in the operation of the Transmission equipment. Additionally, the candidate will ensure all relevant outage data is retained so appropriate performance summaries can be produced.

Responsibilities:
• Acquire relevant power system information from all available sources (including Control Center operator logs and database, Digital Fault Recorders, ‘smart’ field devices, substation drawings) and analyze all Transmission system events for correct or incorrect equipment operation;
• Based on the analysis of equipment operation, its ability to deliver power and the associated priority, initiate corrective action to mitigate problems/issues and follow-up that appropriate actions are completed;
• Ensure that accurate and relevant power system event data is entered and saved in the performance database;
• Help locate power system faults using power system simulator programs for expedient dispatch of field resources;
• Manage the operation, and associated networks/communication links, of numerous ‘smart’ devices (digital/numeric relays, smart meters, Digital Fault Recorders, etc.) to provide valuable information for forensic analyses of Transmission system disturbances. Propose changes to these devices, networks and related processes for increased analysis capability;
• Provide technical support in the answering of performance related information requests for internal and external stakeholders;
• Liaison with office and field Protection and Control (P&C) specialists to resolve P&C equipment deficiencies;
• Provide technical support in the implementation of new power system monitoring equipment;
• Support the development, interpretation, implementation and modification of operational standards and practices that affect the quality of the electrical service to customers.

Qualifications:
• Must have a Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering with a minimum 3 years related experience in the area(s) of: Fault and Disturbance Analysis, Protection & Control, power system operation and/or power system equipment.
• Must be registered or eligible to register as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGGA).
• Formal training in the area(s) of Fault and Disturbance Analysis and/or Protection & Control is preferred.
• Knowledge of engineering applications including Aspen One-Liner, PowerBase, TOSS, VISIO, Microstation, and SAP would be an asset.
• Familiar with local area networks, communication schemes, platforms and protocols used to provide local and remote interrogation with substation relays, meters, fault recorders and other intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) would be an asset.
• Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with ability to work in a team environment, positively influence others, and develop strong internal and external relationships.
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to simultaneously manage a wide variety of issues.
• Strong analytical, risk assessment and problem solving skills.
• Strong written, reporting and graphical presentation skills.
