This role focuses on leading a group of technical experts responsible for performing power system operations analysis. This position is a permanent full time position based out of the Calgary head office and will report to the Director, System Operations.
AltaLink’s System Operations Department currently has an opening for a Manager, System Operations Engineering located in our Calgary Head Office. This role focuses on leading a group of technical experts responsible for performing power system operations analysis. This position is a permanent full time position based out of the Calgary head office and will report to the Director, System Operations.
Candidates must have several years of power system engineering experience. You will understand the components of a transmission system, how it operates and how the various subsystems work, (protection, control, reclosing, etc.) You will have experience in evaluating and mitigating power system operational risks through effective planning and coordination with stakeholders, implementing and continuously improving processes and ensuring work is executed efficiently and accurately. You are a strong supporter of teams, enjoy a challenging work environment and are known for your well-developed technical and leadership abilities.
Responsibilities:
Provide leadership and direction to the Power System Operations Engineering group responsible for:
• Performing and evaluating power system operational studies required to ensure the safe, efficient and reliable real-time operation of AltaLink’s transmission system.
• Performing power system engineering studies such as steady state load flows, dynamics analysis, PV/QV analysis, etc.
• Identifying and developing solutions to operational problems.
• Undertaking system impact and risk management studies to evaluate and secure outages for maintenance and project integration.
• Developing transmission system operating procedures.
• Creating operating procedures for interconnected facilities of external parties.
• Providing technical support to the Control Center operators and scheduling group.
• Working with internal and external customers to develop a common understanding of operational issues to support the ongoing development of facility and procedural improvements.
• Enhancing internal and external working processes.
Qualifications
• Professional Engineering designation in Alberta with several years experience in real-time power system operations and power system engineering.
• Proven leadership experience and skill.
• Excellent interpersonal communication skills along with a strong team spirit.
• Demonstrated ability to coach and mentor individuals and teams.
• Excellent problem solver coupled with a proven ability to lead groups involved in fast paced, high-pressure environments.
