Airborne Ultrasound - The Alpha and the Omega

An iPresentation Tutorial by Jim Hall, Ultra-Sound Technologies

Airborne Ultrasound for years, was for some companies the beginning...the "ALPHA" of their PdM program.

Airborne ultrasound was used to find air leaks, diagnose steam traps, and listen to bearings. Some of these companies have since dropped the ultrasound program in favor of vibration, infrared and oil analysis only. These ultrasound programs of the past have simply taken on a new role as a troubleshooting tool. To be used for air leaks, steam traps and occasionally used to listen for arcing tracking and corona activity in switchgear.

View this 28 minute iPresentation to learn how Airborne Ultrasound can become the "ALPHA and the OMEGA" of your PdM program.

Augmented Reality for Maintenance and Repair

As part of exploration into the potential benefits of using AR for maintenance and repair, this group designed, implemented, and user tested a prototype augmented reality application to support military mechanics conducting routine maintenance tasks inside an armored vehicle turret.

This prototype uses a tracked head-worn display to augment a mechanics natural view with text, labels, arrows, and animated sequences designed to facilitate task comprehension, location, and execution. A within-subject controlled user study examined professional military mechanics using the system to complete 18 common tasks under field conditions. These tasks included installing and removing fasteners and indicator lights, and connecting cables, all within the cramped interior of an armored personnel carrier turret. An augmented reality condition was tested against two baseline conditions: an untracked head-worn display with text and graphics and a fixed flat panel display representing an improved version of the laptop-based documentation currently employed in practice.

The augmented reality condition allowed mechanics to locate tasks more quickly than when using either baseline, and in some instances, resulted in less overall head movement. A qualitative survey showed mechanics found the augmented reality condition intuitive and satisfying for the tested sequence of tasks.

Best Practices in Oil Sampling

A 7 minute iPresentation Tutorial by Kelly Wollschlager, Trico Corp

A company could spend thousands of dollars collecting oil samples, analyzing reports only to find out that the means that the sample was extracted jeopardized the competency of the sample itself. Some of the areas where data integrity could be comprised include: how was the sample taken, what tools were used to take the sample, and where was the sample taken. This i-Presentation will discuss how to achieve best practices in oil sampling.
