Consider establishing a vendor/supplier kitting process at your facility. This is a relatively new concept but beginning to take hold, especially in fast moving assembly operations that require minimal downtime, and maximum utilization of their craftsperson when a downtime situation occurs. The vendor kitting program begins with purchasing and the planner coordinating efforts with the supplier to ship several parts together. The parts are for a planned maintenance activity at the plant or facility. They are packaged in one container, and specify the area and person if known to ship and deliver the item(s) to. The supplier may even be designated to receive parts from other suppliers to ship a complete package. The vendor kitting program, when implemented correctly, is very successful as all parts are packaged and delivered to the designated work site.
