Twitter is what is known as a micro-blog and millions of people are now communicating ideas, thought and other great information in less that 140 characters - which fits in perfectly with a maintenance professionals time and attention compressed day.
Here is what you need to know
1) Go to www.twitter.com
2) Create an account
3) Use the twitter search engine to search topics of interest or people or companies you might like to follow. Simply click follow if you see someone you want to follow. You can always un-follow later if their tweets (messages) do not live up to your expectations
4) Watch other tweets for a while and find out what you like and what you don't
5) Now it's your turn. Create a message that is less than 140 characters (spellcheck) and copy into the "What are you doing" box. Once you click "Update" your message gets shouted out to everyone who follows you. Messages on your Twitter home page are from people you "follow". Your followers will see your message when you tweet. Got it?
