The 20th annual IEEE IAS Electrical Safety Workshop (ESW) - produced by the IEEE IAS Electrical Safety Committee, is now behind us, and what an event it was: the two days surrounding the technical sessions were packed with between three standards committee meetings, nine tutorials, three technical tours, two poster sessions and a vendor’s exposition featuring the latest electrical safety products, and of course plenty of time to unwind and network at the evening social events and hospitality suites. But the main event is the ESW’s renowned papers and case studies.
It’s been said that “if you want to see what electrical safety will look like in five years, go the ESW this year.” The ESW has long been the venue where papers and research are unveiled that ultimately shape the world’s electrical standards (such as NPA 70E and CSA Z462). “We have been fortunate to have attracted a consistently high quality of presenters and papers over the years,” explains Ken White, ESW Technical Program Chair. “We hosted 28 presentations—ranging from case studies, statistical analyses, and alternative arc flash calculation models, to insights into international domestic and standards, and explorations into change-management and leadership.” The diversity and range of papers is a credit to the workshop and one of the reasons why so many industry leaders rate this conference as a ‘must attend’.
The ESW is welcoming proposals for papers for next year’s event which takes place at the beautiful Sheraton San Diego Marina Hotel, during the week of February 4th, 2014. Help the ESW to “change the culture of electrical safety.” The call for papers is open through March 1. Visit http://ewh.ieee.org/cmte/ias-esw/ for more information.
