RAP 1 David Armstrong
Please welcome to the stage with cohesive Mr. David Armstrong. All right. All right. All right. We are in Austin, right? All right. So let's talk about how maximil can be the engine of the digital twin. So let's go. All right the engine of the digital twin. For sustainable future in the era of the metaverse. Not meta the metaverse. So let's begin. So, how do we move? Our community forward from where we are today or where we should be today. Into this world where we delve into the metaverse. This is real. This is where we are. This is a net video representation of an asset which is being built today. But in order to understand where we are today and where we want to go we have to go back. In time we need to talk about where we were in the beginning. because Maximo as we know it started as a maintenance to it was a maintenance tool in order to get these guys what they needed in the field to do the right work at the right time. But over the time they became burdened with becoming better. They wanted to move in the reliability space. They'd attended Terry's conferences and they knew there was a better way than just doing preventative work. And then there was this other part of the business that we needed to incorporate in that world because maintaining and sustaining is quite different from reliability that infers asset management and how we actually manage our assets which sometimes these two they didn't quite handshake properly. There was perhaps some tension between these worlds. So it was how did we make these worlds come together? How do we transcend the bridge that information and a digital manner? And it today it's really about on the right side is how do we build those reliability models create that environment that can be pushed into the iot connected environment world? So what we know as the design delivery and operate space within the project and delivery conceptual world. We needed to move that. We needed a vehicle to move that and we use our connected data environments to connect those worlds. Right a connected data environment to bridge the gap and to optimize our data. So it moves and becomes actionable. That's really what we needed to do. That's really what we needed to do and we still need to do today. So let's talk about what actional actioning are our data is all about. Well, so the business level we need analysis and decisions. We need to make decisions. Based on Covenant information that we can trust we can believe in to optimize the asset value the asset management side. But in order to do that, we need baselines and simulations to compare against right? How do you know where you want to be or where you are unless you can compare it against somebody and then we need to put rigid engineering controls around that information. Because it's we live in a world of constant change. Right, so that sets the foundation for creating alarms in the field that we can know. It's the right time to do the right work. And this is the reliability world that we know. It's the maximal world. We know and we're Now supported by these incredible tool set that allows us to push information. Through leading Technologies connect to environments that aren't even in our systems. We connect to the Legacy systems. We can pull data in from virtually anywhere. Now that technology exists. Of course, we all know it as the Maximo application suite and what I'm here to talk about is how they are the fundamental and foundational pieces of a performance digital twin digital twin is a word often used. I believe it's overused. I believe the digital twin is the digitalization of your entire facility. It's what resides in the minds of your of your trades and your engineers. That's what we need to digitalize because that's the missing link. That's the ingredient, right? Pulling that out is what this is where the culture is often missing and that's what Terry goes on about the conferences, you know culture can eat your lunch culture can eat your lunch and it does right. So how do we create an environment that people can trust and believe so we can Infuse that information throughout this incredible system to allow data to travel today allow data to be actionable because that my friends will become your digital twin and your path into a world where we need to go. And we need to go quickly. So let's perhaps talk about move into that world of what we need to do. So why now? Why now? What is this AI thing? artificial intelligence Are we there yet? I mean, we've got some incredible tools that help us down this path. But I actually believe AI should stand for Applied intelligence. Applied intelligence is what we're missing. It is the missing link. Right. It's the secret sauce. if the black book it's the stuff that exists that we need to pull out of the heads of the people that we trust and digitalize because that's how we become a leading organization and the 1% Club are there and that's part of why now, so let's shift. right and shift quickly So you guys are probably heard this you're all Geeks. I'm a geek my propeller spins more as well. It's been around for a long time. Wasn't it? What is it telling us? Is it telling us that the computer power available is doubling every year. What does that mean? It means that the Mac that I just bought my daughter this morning is already obsolete. That's what it means. But think about that the technology that you're investing today is already obsolete because we're going to hear what IBM's doing. They're not looking today. They're looking three years and five years down the road because they're here to support you on this journey. So when you're ready, they've already proven it. And that's what helps us Moore's Law is one of the critical pieces that we're going to add to this puddled puzzle, which is making it available to transcend information throughout your organization. So that's an easy one. We know that one. Who knows what this one is? I know part of the room does this is Matt Cass law. This is about Network Power so transistors and it's what it is. It's the ability to connect. Does anybody heard of this Cloud thing? It's just a fat. It'll go away. Right the elastic Cloud the ability to connect. So how many connections exist in the world today? How many connections exist today? It's an incredible number, but what I'm saying, is that these two. pillars are one leg of a three-legged stool because there's something else which is going to cause a disruption A disruption. So deep that is going to cause a step change in the way that we think the way that we work the systems that we working. and I'm leading you to a different place which is where I believe and I know that IBM is going to take is on that Journey. But it's where our kids interact today. our kids don't while they text of course, but they text in an immersive way. They live in the digital world. They've gamified everything and that's the world that we're going to to live in. Today maybe not but some people are and some people are beta testing this technology already. So this step change. throughout history There's always being the stasis. And then something comes along and disrupts everything. So we just went through covid. Was it a disruptor damn skippy. We're all working from home and our boxer shorts. That's a wonderful thing. Right? But when I think about, you know, the collusion and the Confluence of Moore's Law and metcalfe's law. What we're really talking about is the ability to create a network of sensors. a network of sensors There are 10 to the power of 21 sensors connected in the world today. That's a billion trillion. That's the network power that our transistors are able to connect to this is incredible. Because it allows us to do things that we never thought was possible. A billion trillion is the estimated number of stars in our galaxy by the way, how much is intelligence is actually out there? We can find out we can find out because there are four critical helpers along this journey. I'm talking about the elastic Cloud Big Data iot AI what did we learn about yesterday? Where is IBM taken us down on this journey. They're helping us realize the potential of accessing that 1 billion trillion connection points. It's really incredible. So in order to finish that three-legged stool I have to talk about huang's law and that's the the GPU power the graphics processing unit. Right? And basically that is doubling every year. Doubling every year so that old-fashioned video that I showed you which is really cool. It's only going to improve that is the immersive world that we're going to delve into we're going to dive head first in it and you know, even some of the gray hairs in this room, We're already there right we go home and we play games and we work in that world and we're interacting in that world and we're texting in that world. But that is going to be our interface as we move forward because there's a pressing need to move into this world. the metaverse So the metaverse is made possible by the ability to consume information to push information to connect and make the ability to connect to and from from virtually anywhere. I can access people in the field. I can be sad at home and seen the same information the same p&ids from their Trimble headsets or their Microsoft hololens. It really doesn't matter what the platform is. It could be spot. It could be a drone. They're just carriers that enable us to get the devices and the systems in the field so we can digest the information so we can make confident decisions in the field in real time. in real time It's really cool. It's really impressive and we're there. So you have a choice? And I say this tongue in cheek. But it's coming. It's hurtling towards Earth so you can choose to not look up. You can choose it's a choice. But in 1955 there was a little thing called The Fortune 500 that was created. and there are only 57 of those Fortune 500 companies. around today 57 and from year 2000 only 51% exist from that 500 and of the current crop 40% will be gone by 2030. My company is a cohesion of eight companies. and if you think about it. 40% of this room You're going to wear a different badge. So that reality is coming my friends. It's coming to a station near you. so I would suggest you get on the bus because I want to be part of that world and you know, try Riga Maximo perhaps both it should be both right but it's really this is the current vehicle that we have to digitalize our intelligence. Our intelligence as a species our intelligence for the trades which are disappearing on our Engineers which disappear every day every day. They check their card and they might not come back. Have you tried replacing one lately my goodness. We need a vehicle to capture that critical information. The most important asset in your corporation today is the data. It's worth more than the physical assets. So let's talk about some of the accelerators you need to scale. So the elastic Cloud environment that we have available today is the only way to scale a digitalization effort. It's the only way to access those 10 to the power of 21 connections. Adding people. Good luck. Invest in them before they leave future-proof your business by digitalizing what's in their heads? So they can believe in the decisions that are going to be made by the systems that you interact with every day. Speed we need to stop. Procrastinating and move right because just like those Fortune 500 companies. If if we're not doing it, somebody else is going to do it. And the reality is that somebody else is going to use data to make us eat our lunch. limit rework so you can't go fast if you're always looking backwards. But you can't go fast, right if you're always starting again. So whatever you do put controls on your data. So it's always Evergreen. So when you make a decision, it's trustworthy enough. So when you put people in the field, they're safe. They can achieve their mission. And you can confidently ensure that they're going to go back to their families or protect your business because the business is not protected today. If you haven't digitalized all your IP. It's leaving in droves, right? We have a crisis in the world today not just in this country of losing our intelligence. Right so sustainability. Sitting still is not sustainable action. You have to choose to exist choose to act. So one of the things I would suggest that you should invest in is agnostic ecosystems which will adapt and allow you to adopt what you already own. The data in your legacy systems is now completely accessible and we can suck it in now, right? It can be part of that billion trillion data points, which is now fundamentally available to all But the choice is really you need to start and I think there's dither in this room. We need to start. We need to protect the nest we have to protect the house. Maybe if you're in Vegas, they always protect the house. So protect the house. We're not rolling dice anymore. Right? It's coming. Oh look at that big rock up there. Choose your partner's wisely, by the way, because as a community of of Partners and practitioners and helpers, we all have to work together because there's more at stake than just our profit and loss statements. Right. There is more at stake here. We need to move to a sustainable future. I said it the other day the world's on fire. We got to do things differently. So little quote happened a little while ago. Alexander the Great I have met the enemy and it is I he was talking about what's in his head. right think about that at the at the trade level in your facilities today what's in their heads? They're uncomfortable. They're fearful, right? They want to do better give them the vehicle give them the tools. Stop sitting and let's move forward, right? every there we're in a point of stasis, but we're leaving stasis. Now. We're about to do a step change on I choose to move and you should too right together that can be the way that we move forward because that's just the better way to go. Thank you.
You can ask anything about maintenance, reliability, and asset management.
