Para entender esta definición completamente debemos primero entender lo que es el significado de mejores prácticas. Son las prácticas que permiten a una compañía llegar a ser líder en su respectivo mercado. Sin embargo, las Mejores Prácticas no son las mismas para todas las compañías.

Por ejemplo, si una compañía está en un mercado declinante, en donde las presiones deberán llevar al máximo las ganancias con un volumen fijo de ventas, un conjunto de mejores prácticas quizás permita el liderazgo de mercadotecnia. Sin embargo, si la compañía está en un modo de crecimiento con ganancias dictadas ganando la cuota rápida del mercado, un conjunto diferente de mejores prácticas sería apropiado. Por lo tanto, MEJOR es determinado por las condiciones de negocio, no por un conjunto fijo de prácticas empresariales.
