How to Improve Reliability by Vibration Signature Analysis

How to Improve Reliability by Vibration Signature Analysis

TRC-2018 Learning Zone 41:35
by Jim Berry, Technical Associates of Charlotte

This session will unveil the potent capability of Vibration Analysis to look within rotating machinery to evaluate a wide variety of components with the focused objective to assess their reliability. The instructor will demonstrate how this can be accomplished using the power of Vibration Signature Analysis. Much of the material for this session will come from Technical Associates’ 3-day “Entry Vibration Analysis” seminar. This session will focus on those having little or no vibration experience with the objective of imparting vibration fundamentals and likewise demonstrating how to detect a series of problems such as:

  • Unbalance
  • Misalignment
  • Mechanical Looseness
  • Foot Related Problems (Soft Foot, Sprung Foot, etc.)
  • Introduction to Rolling Element Bearing Fault Detection

One highlight of this session will be to compare “Before” and “After” data, to allow each participant to see the distinct difference prior to and following corrective actions to resolve problems detected. For example, we will show a plot that vividly shows a rolling element bearing having distinct faults; then compare it to a plot after this bearing has been replaced. Another highlight will reveal how vibration can pinpoint which particular rolling element bearing has faults within it. Real-world programs will be discussed by the instructor who has the privilege of being heavily involved with Condition Based Maintenance and Reliability for over 35 years. This has included auditing programs for a significant number of plants and corporations. Finally, this session will close with why adding Vibration Analysis to Reliability Programs can not only go far in improving the reliability of rotating machinery and accompanying assets, but also in helping the program achieve much higher Benefit-to-Cost Ratios. Likewise, it will simultaneously go far in reducing downtime of such assets and enhancing their productivity – therefore, improving the bottom line at those plants that incorporate Vibration Signature Analysis in their Reliability Programs. Each session participant should walk away with a clear understanding of what key steps will and will not likely result in full mature Reliability improvement.

Basic Vibration Analysis, Case Histories

Basic Vibration Analysis, Case Histories

TRC-2018 Learning Zone 41:41
by Robert Jones, Vibrometrics

Reliability-centered maintenance depends on accurate information about the condition of the machinery. Vibration analysis is one method of obtaining that information. Our primary concern is the condition of the bearings. If the bearings are in good condition, even if the machine is out of balance, misaligned, or loose it still operates until these conditions can be corrected. But if the bearings are faulty, disaster can be just around the corner. By the use of vibration spectrums and time domain spectrums collected by the author, under operating plant conditions, it will be demonstrated how the necessary data can be analyzed to determine the condition of the machine bearings. With operational speeds that will vary from 8 RPM to 3600 RPM, other machine fault conditions and solutions will be presented. Someone once said that if we had perfect information we could all make perfect decisions. Vibration analysis may not provide perfect information but the information provided will enable the user to make better decisions during the operation of plant equipment.

Digitalization of Vibration-Based Condition Monitoring

Digitalization of Vibration-Based Condition Monitoring

TRC-2018 Learning Zone 44:26
by Dries Van Loon and Alain Naets, PRUFTECHNIK

Condition monitoring with non-destructive vibration analysis is experiencing an accelerated development due to several factors that work as a catalyst. Industrial and marine installations are increasingly interconnected by industry standard TCP/IP based networks. Transmission of wireless data is becoming cheaper and much faster. Digital storage of large data volumes is not a costly hurdle any longer and engineers and technicians are used to working with intuitive and mobile tablets and smartphones that virtually connect them via apps to their plants, their homes, and even their own health parameters. New techniques such as data mining and analytics have emerged. They enable us to quickly plow through enormous amounts of data and extract patterns and relations that were thus far hidden from sight. In this presentation, we are exploring how these new technologies will empower technicians and engineers to efficiently and accurately predict and analyze wear and damages in rotating equipment and how these new technologies are boosting the effectiveness of the vibration analyst. The result is an accrued efficiency of industrial production units, marine vessels, and offshore units, rendering them safer, less polluting and more profitable.

Making It in a High Frequency World Striving for High Frequency Industrial Accelerometers

As predictive maintenance teams in industrial facilities strive for a more complete picture of their equipment’s health, high frequency vibration measurements have become a crucial addition for identifying faults, such as motor and pump bearing defects and gear tooth inconsistencies in high-speed gearboxes. As a result, there is an upsurge in demand for vibration sensors with a high frequency response.

Identifying Bearing Failure at an Early Stage

Identifying Bearing Failure at an Early Stage

Detecting wear, imbalance and misalignment of rotating parts within machinery is critical to its health and overall performance. This can be achieved by implementing a variety of proven techniques. Vibration analysis, for example, uses accelerometers to detect potential problems with industrial equipment caused by incorrectly aligned, loose, or unbalanced rotating parts.
