The Ups and Downs of Reliability Centered Maintenance

The Ups and Downs of Reliability Centered Maintenance

TRC-2019 Learning Zone (43 minutes)

by Travis Hohn and Jorgan Peadon, Sammamish Plateau Water

Sammamish Plateau Water embarked on the implementation of Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) to advance their overall asset management program and optimize maintenance strategies. Initial expected outcomes included reduced maintenance time, trained operators, documented processes and strategies and a comprehensive dynamic preventive maintenance program. The initial program was facilitated by a consultant and consisted of a pilot fully reviewing 2 critical facilities and staff training. Since the pilot staff have been working in-house to review every facility, develop preventive work plans with new work tasks focused on the RCM findings, and development standard operation procedures. The RCM project has been enlightening and frustrating. The presenters will examine how the RCM process began, the objectives and the challenges encountered. Including how it has optimized maintenance strategies, challenged the status quo of operation and maintenance tasks and mindset and how the organization is moving forward to fully complete and implement Reliability Centered Maintenance as a way of doing business.
