The University of North Carolina at Charlotte is seeking applications for a Fire Alarm Technician for the Facilities Management Department. This is a full-time, permanent staff position.


Salary: $47,692 - $53,000


Primary Purpose of Position: The person in this position will perform skilled work in maintaining, repairing, and optimizing fire alarm/fire suppression systems and related equipment. The person in this position will review drawings, specifications, codes, and standards. The person in this position will conduct installation activities, perform device and panel-level troubleshooting, and prepare technical documentation. The person in this position will survey site conditions to verify that they support the fire alarm system design and layout requirements.


Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from a technical college with an Associate degree in electromechanical technology or instrumentation technology and a minimum of two years’ experience related to the area of assignment experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience.


Essential Job Duties: Repair, maintain, install and optimize fire alarm and fire suppression systems and equipment, adhering to University of North Carolina at Charlotte and North Carolina State Construction standards. Maintain accurate and precise documentation daily. Maintain a clean and safe work environment. Communicate in a professional manner and provide excellent customer service. Interpret and understand blueprints, diagrams, submittals, specifications, schematics and operational product manuals.


Preferred Qualifications: Associate’s degree in electronics and one year of experience in the repair and maintenance of a variety of electronic devices; or the equivalent in training and experience is required. A minimum of three years of progressive experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of commercial-grade fire alarm systems is required; five years is desired. Thorough knowledge of the NFPA 72 National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code is preferred. Ability to competently operate necessary tools and equipment (computers, hand and power tools, diagnostic equipment, meters, etc.), carry and move material required. Ability to complete site surveys, identify code issues and provide solutions required. Self-motivated with little direct supervision required. Working knowledge of Fire Alarm Network Communications and Fire Suppression Systems (fire sprinkler and clean agent) preferred. NICET Certification in Fire Alarm Systems (level 2 or greater) is preferred. Experience with Simplex and Siemens fire alarm systems preferred. Ability to effectively communicate the English language (reading, writing, interpretation, and comprehension) Effective skills in verbal, written, and interpersonal communication. Computer literate. Working knowledge and skill with Google Documents, Microsoft Word, and Excel, and willingness to learn new programs. Ability to effectively work/interact with persons from different backgrounds and cultures. Ability to foster and create an atmosphere of teamwork. Valid driver’s license is required. The Electronics Specialist operates assigned vehicles on and/or off campus and is required to possess, maintain, or obtain a valid driver’s license upon appointment to the position. The selected candidate must have the mental and physical capabilities to perform the essential functions of the position. Ability to climb ladders and use lifts safely at working at various heights
