In 2023 an opportunity was presented to hire a talented graduate engineer but there was no open position available nor planned. Given the planned retirement of a leadership member, it became apparent that the Salem and Beverly Water Supply Board needed to act quickly to review its organization chart, labor budgets, and create a timely hiring and onboarding process. When asked, “how are you going to train your replacement to ensure a smoot transition from a seasoned professional to ensure the new hire is successful” there was a resounding “not sure” response. This session will discuss the aha moment, the rigorous efforts in place and how the learnings will be used for this, and future staff transitions to ensure “planned” successions to maintain operational excellence.
