La delgadez puede ser buena para su talle pero no es muy deseable para los ejes sobresalidos de sus bombas. Una manera rápida de asegurarse que sus bombas sobresalidas tengan el vigor para resistir la operación lejos del mejor punto de eficiencia es de determinar su proporción de la delgadez. La proporción es calculada tomando el cubo de la longitud (L) del centro del cojinete interior al fin sobresalido por encima del eje y dividirlo por el diámetro (D) del eje de la bomba en la caja de relleno (bajo la manga) al cuarto poder. Como lo puede ver de la fórmula, ejes de grandes de diámetro que tienen limitados aleros de los cojinetes interiores son deseables. Las proporciones de veinticinco o menos deben manejar menos la presión desigualmente distribuida en la voluta de bomba causada por el estrangulamiento sin permitir flexibilidad del eje que causa sello prematuro o fallas de cojinete. Es un buen ejercicio verificar la proporción de la delgadez de su bomba problemática para ver si hay oportunidad para la mejora.
