Wound cellulose depth filters are an inexpensive method for obtaining high-efficiency filtration (less than 1 micron) in light viscosity oils such as hydraulic, turbine, or transformer oils. They are designed for low flow, generally less than 3 gpm. Depth filtration is not recommended for EP gear oils due to potential additive stripping or for water removal purposes. When saturated with water, the filter media will expand, reducing pressure differential to indicate when the filter needs changing.
