A New Context: The Industrial Internet of Things

IMC-2016 RAP Talk - 20:12
by John Murphy, Reliabilityweb.com

What is the Industrial Internet of Things? In this RAP Talk from IMC-2016, John Murphy breaks the term down by explaining the various pieces of it. According to Murphy, the new context is Industrial Internet of Things is part of asset management. Asset managers must be thinking about that as they make any investment going forward.

The NEW Asset Management Passports for Uptime Elements

IMC-2016 - 37:59
by Rhys Davies and Claire Gowson, Discursive

In this presentation from IMC-2016, Rhys Davies and Claire Gowson outline the history and intention behind the new asset management passports for the Uptime Elements. When creating the new elements, they wanted them to do two things. The first was to introduce a new block of elements, which describe the processes and provide additional connections between various elements. The second was to provide a visualization of the process elements into an asset management framework. Learn more by watching this video.

Industry in Transition: Asset Management for the Digital Enterprise

Engineering Technology and Reality Modeling Enables Whole Life Asset Management

IMC-2016 RAP Talk - 22:46
by Greg Bentley, CEO, President and Chairman of the Board of Bentley Systems

Greg Bentley, CEO, Bentley Systems, discusses his near-term predictions of the visual workplace and the technologies available today for maintenance professionals to work in a realistic 3D visualization environment where asset information is accessible and understood in context. Bentley, a thought leader in engineering technology, will convince you that reality modeling is going mainstream. The adoption rate of UAVs and reality modeling is making continuous surveying of assets a reality for "inspectioneering”.

IoT Total Solution Management (TSM) at J&J Global Manufacturing Sites

IMC-2016 - 42:20
by Matt Boehne, Banetti

Johnson & Johnson is leveraging IBM Watson Analytics and IoT toolsets with the Banetti IoT TSM expertise to gain deep understanding and control over the breadth and depth of all Intelligent Assets deployed in the J&J Enterprise. IoT TSM is an Enterprise Device & Asset Management (EDAM) solution rooted in the power of the IBM IoT toolset and Watson Analytics. The IoT TSM approach of a single solution layer lying on top of existing systems and devices allows J&J to deploy a standard across all production sites regardless of what underlying technology is in place today.

With IoT TSM in place, J&J has an unprecedented window into the Enterprise technology landscape, both legacy and planned. The solution provides a single dashboard view of the Enterprise, enabling insight into the “dark” sectors of the manufacturing organization while providing intelligent decision support across the Enterprise from top to bottom. TSM is an “active listener” in the world of invisible IT communications and information, which allows J&J to react immediately and intelligently to the rapidly changing BYOD landscape.

CMC Steel South Carolina’s Reliability Journey

IMC-2016 - 51:22
by Greg Evans, CMC

CMC Steel South Carolina's reliability journey was started out of a need to be the low cost producer in the steel industry. A study found that their maintenance practices were completely reactive and their facilities were underutilized. In January of 2005, they began a Reliability Excellence initiative with LCE in an effort to achieve world-class reliability. Watch this video to learn more about their reliability journey and how they were able to save over $6 million as a result of PdM programs since 2012.

Monitoring Mobile Mining Equipment - Challenges & Solutions

The RELIABILITY Conference - 42:59
by Ron Newman, PRUFTECHNIK Canada

Vibration measurement has come of age in the last 20 years. While the practice of continuous on-line monitoring of critical machines in the oil, gas, and petrochemical industries has been commonplace for several decades, it is only recently that companies who had been using intermittent data collection techniques are now embracing continuous monitoring. The benefits are substantial! The new “horizon” is mobile equipment … draglines, shovels, bucket-wheel excavators, stacker-reclaimers, heavy haul trucks, are all equally important to production and just as “critical” as a gas compressor. However, unlike stationary machinery, monitoring mobile equipment brings substantial challenges that must be addressed to ensure accurate, repeatable, and reliable data acquisition. Rapid speed and load variations are just one element of the application. The logistics of sensor mounting, cabling, network communications, and general serviceability, bring unique complications to the task of monitoring these machines. We will discuss these obstacles and present new solutions that have the potential to bring significant reliability improvements to large mobile equipment.

The Challenges in Implementing Asset Management

The RELIABILITY Conference Asset Management Forum - 41:45
by Dharmen Dhaliah- Manager Asset Management, City of Toronto

In the last few years, we have seen the emergence of Asset Management in many industries from the private to the public sector. Many organizations have been successful in getting started with Asset Management and embracing the new paradigm shift. The use of PAS55 and more the recently the availability of ISO 55000 suites have further ramped up the momentum of Asset Management on the global stage. It has become the trending topic in the industry and has created a sort of shakeout similar to what reliability did years ago.

Without doubt organizations fully understand the importance of asset management and the benefits they can gain from it. There is no question that organizations are willing to shift gear and implement asset management. The major stumbling block is finding the right organizational approach. We are witnessing lots of organizations stuttering and getting confused when it comes to embracing and implementing Asset Management.

Questions such as:

"How should I structure my organization to fit in Asset Management?"

"How will that impact the other functional areas?"

"How will they all coexist and interact with each other?"

"What should be done to manage that paradigm shift?”

Most importantly, “Are we not already practicing asset management?”
