Are you planning a project to improve equipment reliability? Where do you start? There are generally two ways to approach the problem - top down or bottom up.
Monitoring motor bearing lubrication in a food plant with ultrasound tells us when to re-grease, and helps us avoid over greasing. It also reveals when grease has been washed down the drain.
Using thermal imaging to determine both the cause and severity of a hot spot is not always easy. Just because you see a problem does not necessarily mean you have located the heat source. In most
Did you know that 70% of component replacements or "loss of usefulness" are due to surface degradation? In hydraulic and lubricating systems, 20% of these replacements result from corrosion ...
The skilled millwright and pump specialist has experienced multiple breakdowns with a centrifugal pump. The pump has been rebuilt multiple times but it keeps breaking down with 4-6
The materials used in the mechanical seal were as follows: Shaft - 400 series SS Sleeve - Titanium Setscrews - Carbon steel The Cause: The dissimilar metals in this case were corroding away the setscrews. Basically the setscrews become the sacrificial anodes between the shaft and the sleeve. The Solution: The carbon steel setscrews where replaced with hastaloy C. The pump has now been running for over two years.
It is a good idea to complete a few pre-alignment steps prior to conducting any alignment activity. For instance:
1. Verify a possible misalignment condition by using a condition monitoring technology such as vibration analysis or thermography when possible. This will help to identify the type of misalignment condition that is present, and any other conditions that could prevent a successful alignment. This may prevent unneeded work activity.
2. Conduct a visual inspection to identify foundation deterioration, grout quality issues, broken bolts, cracks in the machine feet or base, etc. These issues should be corrected before any alignment activity is started.
3. You may wish take a current power consumption and vibration reading on the equipment prior to any alignment activity and another set of readings after the machine has been properly aligned. This will document reductions in harmful vibration as well as the energy required to operate the equipment resulting from improved alignment.
4. Consideration should be given to thermal growth. Accurate thermal growth values should be determined and used during the alignment process. This will help ensure that the equipment is properly aligned during normal operating conditions.
Maintenance adds value by providing available, reliable, safe and eco-friendly production equipment. Yet, fulfilling this task involves costs that can account for a significant part of a
You may be using the wrong breather if the filtered lubricants in your equipment continue to have high moisture content. One of the most critical ingression points of contaminants is located at
