Meggitt Sensing Systems, a Meggitt group division and leader in sensing and monitoring systems for extreme environments, has introduced the Endevco model 7284 series, a family of lightly damped, high-g, triaxial, piezoresistive shock accelerometers designed for weapons testing, high-g data recorders, missile fuzes and other extreme-g applications. These very rugged sensors, available in 20,000 g and 60,000 g ranges, offer superior survivability and low power consumption.

Machinery Health Monitoring Depends on Accelerometers Part 1 - What’s an Accelerometer?

by Wayne Tustin

This is Part 1 of a five-part, lighthearted series entitled, Machinery Health Monitoring Depends on Accelerometers. Part 1 deals with the mechanical aspects of using accelerometers, while Part 2 covers the electronic aspects of dealing with those small signals. Part 3 discusses calibrating accelerometers to determine their sensitivity. In Parts 4 and 5, we attach accelerometers to various machines so they can report on machinery health.

Definition: Vibration Analysis

The analysis of vibration monitoring data to monitor the characteristic changes in rotating machinery caused by imbalance, misalignment, bent shaft, mechanical looseness, faults in gear drives,

Resonance - Machinery Rock & Roll

by Ron Newman

Vibration monitoring and analysis are recognized as key components of a well-founded reliability centered maintenance (RCM) program. Machinery health and long-term reliability are interpolated from trends in vibration amplitude; however, often these levels increase to dangerously high values with little or no warning! Resonance is frequently identified as the root cause. Understanding the physics of natural frequency, and the tools and methods used to recognize and confirm a resonant condition are essential skills for the vibration analyst.

Wireless Sensors Work: A Cost-Effective Alternative to Traditional Machine Monitoring Methods

by Matt Cowen and Christopher Shannon

Traditionally, machine vibration monitoring is performed in two ways: machines can be periodically monitored by utilizing a temporarily mounted sensor and a portable analyzer machine, or machines can be continuously monitored by permanently mounting sensors and wiring them into a high-end diagnostic system in the plant.

Vibration vs. Ultrasound - Two Techniques to Consider in CBM

by Jason Tranter, Allan Rienstra and Tom Murphy

If someone tells you there is only one RIGHT way to do something - you should be highly dubious! As a result of the positive reader response from "RCM vs. FMEA - There Is a Distinct Difference!" (Dec/Jan 2013), Uptime magazine has invited several subject matter experts to write short, related segments that allow our readers to consider alternatives or options when approaching maintenance reliability improvements. In this issue, we examine two popular condition-based maintenance practices and applications — Vibration and Ultrasound.
