Measuring the shaft vibration of machines with fluid film bearings is a well documented best practice in industry. But, what to do when there are no permanently installed proximity probes in the machine exhibiting symptoms of a problem? For many years, practitioners have used dial indicator magnetic bases or brackets bolted to bearing housings to temporarily support proximity probes. Wooden sticks with a V notch were also used to measure shaft vibration. Now, a unique magnetic mounting device has been developed to address this problem of temporary proximity probe mounting.

As frequency data are derived from a transducer providing a raw time waveform electrical signal of the vibration measurement, whether it be a displacement probe, velocity pickup, or an accelerometer, it is worth going back to basics for a moment to see how this raw data can be a big help in analyzing and pinpointing some fundamental vibration issues. This presentation is intended to show the value of retaining a sample of the collected time waveform and to describe how the raw data should be properly collected and analyzed. This additional information will help one to arrive at a solid PdM strategy for pinpointing and confirming complex vibration problems with a high degree of confidence.

Detecting rolling element bearing faults is key to success in vibration analysis, and most analysts utilize a database of bearings to know where to look in the spectrum. But did you know that those frequencies may be incorrect? The peaks don't always appear where you expect. In this Webinar we will review the four key frequencies, learn why the peaks will not appear at the calculated frequencies, and learn why the information from your database may be incorrect. We will also explain how to detect bearing faults without these bearing frequencies.

Did you get to see the previous (record breaking) presentation where we introduced the absolute basics of the vibration spectrum? Well this presentation will take the next step, explaining a little more about the peaks and the patterns you see in the spectrum. We can't turn you into an instant expert, but we hope to demystify what all those peaks mean, and how the diagnostic process works.
