How High Performance Oils and Greases Extend the Application Range for Sealed Bearings

How High Performance Oils and Greases Extend the Application Range for Sealed Bearings

The development of high performance perfluoropolyether (PFPE) lubricants dates back a few decades. These developments were both necessitated and accelerated by aerospace and aviation markets where lubrication at the extremes of low and high temperatures was far more important than it would be in the average industrial environment. Even beyond aviation and aerospace, PFPEs have served admirably whenever the higher initial cost was easily overcome by the far more important need to consistently meet and even exceed performance expectations.

Use Data to Determine When to Use Permanent or Portable Filtration

Use Data to Determine When to Use Permanent or Portable Filtration

Video Tutorial - 27:10
by Jason Kopschinsky, Director of Reliability Services, Des-Case

In many plants the most expensive assets generally get the most attention, but many critical assets are not necessarily the most expensive. This philosophy is often used when deciding when to use offline filtration and when that offline filtration should be permanent or portable. This iPresentation walks you through a maze of data to uncover the clues behind when filtration should be permanent versus portable.

Take Care, Consider Compatibility When Switching to New Grease

Greases are available with many different thickener types, base oils, and base oil viscosities. Mixing of these different types of greases can result in changes in characteristics, leading to a

Green Lubricants – You Don’t Have To Sacrifice Performance To Be Green

Green Lubricants – You Don’t Have To Sacrifice Performance To Be Green

by Joanne Moore - Analytical Chemist, Lubrication Engineers, Inc.

"Green" most commonly refers to products that contribute to green living or practices that help conserve resources like water and energy. It also refers to products that prevent or lessen contributions to air, water & land pollution. With the new, stricter EPA rules for lubricants used by vessels on U.S. waterways, the topic of green lubricants is a timely one. This presentation covers the following: What Is Green?, Green Lubricants Formulation Strategy, What Is VGP?, VGP Compliant Lubricants, Applications & Performance, The EAL Marketplace, and EAL Grease Example.
Learning Points:
1) Being "green" is part of the Triple Bottom Line for companies: Environment (Planet), Social (People), Economic (Profit).
2) New U.S. EPA rules require vessels in U.S. waterways to use VGP-compliant lubricants for oil-to-sea interfaces.
3) Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EALs) are VGP compliant. They are biodegradable, minimally toxic and not bio accumulative. The challenge for the lubricant manufacturer: How to formulate EALs that still hold up in the application and protect the equipment. (Note: Not all "bio-oils" are EALs.)
