This article is the second in a series of four. The first article provided a summary of how the vibration patterns change as the bearing fails. After very briefly recapping the basics, this article will discuss the detection and analysis tools that can be used to determine the nature and severity of the bearing fault: ultrasound, Shock Pulse, PeakVue, enveloping, and spectrum and time waveform analysis.

What is vibration? There are three basic types; Linear, Bending and Torsion. Three basic types of transducers for machinery vibration study; acceleration, velocity and displacement. Three basic parameters; acceleration, velocity and displacement. So we need to be able to observe these phenomena in an easily understood way via data acquisition instrumentation. We can then apply 200-year-old math to decipher the meaning of the data represented on the instrument.
By Alan Friedman, DLI Engineering Corp The motor bar peak in a spectrum appears at a frequency equal to the number of motor bars multiplied by the shaft rate of the machine. Although initially, most analysts will have no idea how many motor bars there are, identifying the peak that relates to the motor bars is fairly simple to accomplish. The reason for this is that the motor bar peak will have peaks on either side of it, spaced 120 Hz away (100 Hz where electrical line frequency is 50Hz).
