CLGS: The Fastest Way to Identify a Grease Expert

KANSAS CITY, MO (Jan. 24, 2013)—In the world of maintenance and lubrication, several lubricant-related technical organizations now certify lubrication expertise. These include the International Council for Machinery Lubrication (ICML), the Society of Tribologists & Lubrication Engineers (STLE), and NLGI International. Each has an established program that documents the major criteria for demonstrating knowledge and skill in lubricants and lubrication practices. But only NLGI’s Certified Lubrication Grease Specialist program identifies those individuals who have true expertise in lubricating grease. The letters CLGS after one’s name signify both fundamental and extended knowledge of grease formulations, grease processing, grease testing and grease applications.

In 2011, Des-Case Corporation commissioned a survey of almost 350 industry professionals on the topic of precision lubrication as it relates to overall equipment reliability. We asked them, "How important is precision lubrication to overall equipment reliability?" We provided the respondents with several options for potential responses. The respondents were able to select from one of seven responses, ranging from "critically important," "important but not critical," "slightly important" and so on down to "not at all important."
