Today's economic climate brings with it the challenge of accessing credit for capital investment. In The Ernst & Young Business Risk Report 2010, as shown in Figure 1, access to credit hit number two on the top 10 list of business risks across 14 sectors evaluated in the study. Internationally, asset management professionals are working collaboratively to define new standards that shift the focus away from capital replacement and instead bring visibility to asset performance.
Over the next five years, there will be up to a million military personnel returning to civilian life and getting into the U.S. civilian workforce. Juxtapose this with the 600,000 jobs currently open in advanced manufacturing and the anticipated need for 10 million skilled workers by 2020, and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) sees a “win-win” opportunity for all.

An hour long presentation by Leslie McHattie, Senior Reliability Practitioner, Ivara Corporation
Why do some reliability implementations succeed and others fail? Leslie McHattie has seen it all --some programs are highly successful, most are "satisfactory" and some fail. Trying something new without a plan to manage and sustain the improvement is what we call a silver bullet approach and tends to be very short lived, eventually becoming the flavor of the month.
If the same tools result in variable outcomes, it is evident that the reason this happens does not reside in the tool itself, but rather in how it is managed and applied.

Introduction Despite the global economic slowdown, several factors are conspiring to spark a spate of new capital construction. These factors include: demand for various commodities (e.g., oil, gas and other natural resources); new discoveries along with new extraction and processing technologies for these commodities (e.g., oil deposits in deep water ocean and shale gas deposits in the U.S.); high commodity prices enabling more costly production technologies (e.g., oil sands); and the current cheap cost of capital.Deloitte, in a recent whitepaper about the mining industry in Africa, suggests that countries and companies in Africa and worldwide "continue a push toward significant industrialization and infrastructure renewal."1 As industrial organizations today tackle the challenges of deciding when to build new capacity, they tend to be driven by carefully formulated business cases. Compelling business cases often lead to sizeable capital expansion projects justified by the anticipated growth in revenue and profits that eventually will be garnered. Do these anticipated benefits materialize? Unfortunately, the reality is they typically fall short of expectations for many reasons and risks span the gamut of variables, including political, economic, market, financial, organizational and operational. Arguably, operational risks are, at the same time, one of the largest and one of the most controllable risks and, ironically, one of the most mismanaged.

This presentation discusses how a single integrated system can increase equipment performance, improve plant uptime, optimize reliability and lower life cycle costs. An Electronic Asset Optimization platform is a new system integration architecture and power strategy that addresses the needs of the process and power generation industries to continuously monitor equipment and instrumentation performance related to their operating conditions.
The architecture is based on Industrial Ethernet standards such as IEC 61850, Profinet as well as Fieldbus technologies and covers mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and control system equipment. The platform provides complete visibility into the equipment condition through multiple interfaces that could include web based access. Think of the platform as an automatic and continuous monitoring tool of all the data you have available on equipment and devices within your facility. The platform will provide continuous warnings on equipment condition based on asset monitors developed for the equipment, therefore enabling the user to address concerns before they create operational impact.
