Do we hold the right levels of spare parts? Have we done the right analysis? These are two questions that keep maintenance and reliability engineers awake at night. Determining which approach ...
I have used this method of improving settings for packaging line equipment but can also be applied to most equipment where that piece of equipment can be affected by movement.
I have used this basic maintenance tip mainly with pumps but can also be applied to most equipment where that piece of equipment can be affected by internal or external forces. When you have

1. Never over torque a Fastener. To over-torque a Fastener can cause it to stretch beyond normal limits causing Fastener breakage, or loosening of Fastener 2. Never under torque Fasteners because it can cause the Fastener to loosen to break 3. Ensure you know the torque specification 4. Ensure you know the torque specification if you are using a Fastener with lubricant on it or dry 5. As a general rule Fasteners should be lubricated unless manufacturer states otherwise 6. Know how to use a torque wrench. When all else fails read the instructions. 7. When unsure whether a Fastener should be torque to a specification, torque it 8. Do not re-use a Fastener if: - If it was installed with an impact wrench - If it could result in a safety risk
Fastener Failure Modes:
• Overloading - Force exceeds Fastener strength, Fastener loosens or shears • Over-Torque - damaging the threads and deforming the hardware • Under-Torque - allowing a joint to come loose. It may also allow the joint to flex and thus fail under fatigue. • Brinelling - caused by poor quality washers, leading to a loss of clamp load and failure of the joint • Corrosion - caused by the disintegration of an engineered material due to electrochemical oxidation of metals in reaction with an oxidant such as oxygen, this is why Fasteners must be lubricated unless stated by the equipment manufacturer.
It's always disappointing, but no longer surprising, to find people who actually believe that once you pay for material and put it on the shelf in the storeroom, it no longer costs anything to keep it there. The fact is, there are significant costs associated with holding spare parts on the books.
Quality Bearings & Components (QBC) announces a new line of standard duty 4-bolt flange mounting blocks that have a cast iron housing in addition to a dual seal feature. They are identified as the BBXBLK-HCF… and BBXBLK-UCF… Series and are designed to fit shafts ranging from 1/2” to 3-1/2” in diameter. These new elements help make machinery efficient, more functional, and most importantly, safer. By giving careful consideration to these basic design features, efficiency and reliability increase. Quotes plus online orders are available at the new QBC eStore.
So many have forgotten some of the old school tricks. One that comes to mind is when you have a bolt that has seized use bees wax to help get it loose. As you heat up the part with your torch
To stock or not to stock, that is the question. One of the major flaws in most spare parts management systems is the absence of clear criteria on when to stock an item and when not to stock an
Lowell Corporation has introduced a new torque wrench kit that gives plumbers and utility workers greater flexibility in working with US-style No-HUB couplings.
Many Equipment Failures Could Be Linked To Materials Management
by Art Posey and Phillip Slater
Oh no, not again! Is this the perennial cry of the maintenance and reliability professional? We all know this situation: a recent failure was repaired and has now failed again shortly after.
Danaher Corporation (NYSE:DHR) and Cooper Industries (NYSE:CBE) announced today that they have signed an agreement to combine certain operations of their respective tools manufacturing businesses in a joint venture to create a premier global business with leading brands, greater scale, and a more diversified product portfolio.
When needing to hold a small screw or bolt to a driver, a small dab of high viscous grease can do the trick to hold it to the screwdriver or in the socket driver and allow you to reach it back

Henkel Corporation has introduced two new Loctite threadlockers formulated to withstand consistent operating temperatures up to 360°F. Curing consistently and thoroughly without cleaning, these new products tolerate the oils and lubricants typically found on “as received” threaded fasteners. These products will also cure on plated, aluminum, stainless and chromated fasteners without primers.
- Lock the Mechanical Seal locking collar screws after completing the shaft axial displacement adjustments, shaft alignment procedure. It helps to keep the seal faces from getting damaged.
A 15 minute iPresentation Tutorial by Doug Wallace, CPIM, Life Cycle Engineering
Many MRO storerooms are wrestling with the challenge of optimizing their inventory. But what is the "right" level of inventory to keep? This presentation addresses some of the fundamental considerations involved in making these difficult decisions, and suggests one method for helping to determine the appropriate stocking levels for your own materials.
