 Implementing a Successful CBM Program

Implementing a Successful CBM Program

The RELIABILITY Conference Asset Condition Monitoring Forum - 41:34
by Dharmen Dhaliah, City of Toronto

It is a fact that the way we do maintenance has significantly evolved over the years with a shift to on-condition maintenance. A Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) program has become an integral part and a key strategy in any maintenance/reliability improvement effort.

Depending on the industry and the complexity of its asset a large percentage of maintenance tasks are condition-based. On-condition tasks or predictive maintenance tasks are the preferred tactics to apply when it comes to proactive maintenance. However these tasks don't come very cheap when technologies such as vibration analysis, infrared thermography or oil analysis are required.

As seasoned maintenance/reliability practitioners we fully understand the benefits of investing in a condition based maintenance program. We praise the benefits and the potential returns on investment to senior management to influence them to invest in such a program. Finally we succeed and we are given the required funds to go ahead and implement a CBM Program.

Now the real challenge begins and all kind of questions start to arise such as - Where do we start? How do we implement the program? How do we make sure the implementation will be successful? How do we show the promised return on investment to senior management? How do we show asset performance is improving? How do we consistently demonstrate the benefits of the program to keep it alive in the organization for years to come? This session will provide an overview on how to plan the implementation of a CBM program, how to set it up for success and to make it last for years rather than just being a one-time wonder.

Without Failure Data All You Have is a Work Order Ticket System

Without Failure Data All You Have is a Work Order Ticket System

The RELIABILITY Conference - 38:21
by John Reeve, Total Resource Management

More specifically, without failure modes all you have is a bunch of codes. This may be the most overlooked data element, as most CMMS products do NOT capture the failure mode. This critical data element allows one to (1) derive the ideal maintenance task, (2) quickly compare work order (WO) failure modes with RCM analysis failure modes, and, (3) support drill-down on asset worst offenders for basic failure analysis. Failure data, failure analysis and failure prevention are all part of an integrated process, which helps the reliability team continuously, improve – using the CMMS. Attend this presentation for practical solutions to a common challenge.

Condition Monitoring & Bearing Lubrication Using Ultrasound

Condition Monitoring & Bearing Lubrication Using Ultrasound

The RELIABILITY Conference – 48:04
by Adrian Messer, UE Systems and Richard Reeves, Schreiber Foods

Airborne & structure-borne ultrasound has become a must-have technology for maintenance & reliability. Advancements in instrumentation and software have allowed for an increased use for condition monitoring application. The technology is also seen as a perfect complement to vibration analysis on rotating equipment. In regards to bearing lubrication, ultrasound can be used to prevent over and under lubrication of bearings, which is, a move towards condition based lubrication rather than time based. This presentation will showcase the role that ultrasound has played in the reliability program within Schreiber Foods. Specific condition monitoring and lubrication examples will be used, as well as sound files of bearings in the process of being lubricated.

Choosing & Implementing a Successful Condition Monitoring Program

Choosing & Implementing a Successful Condition Monitoring Program

The RELIABILITY Conference (45:00)
by Patrick Parvin, SPM Instrument

This presentation speaks about choosing the correct techniques, methods, instrumentation and training for a successful Asset Condition Monitoring program. Too many times we see companies purchase either instrumentation that is “too limited” for their actual needs or actually more frequently “too complicated” for their actual needs. Once an investment has been made down the wrong path, it is difficult to get funding to change direction and head down the correct path. We will cover “front line” technology with explanation and description of basic Shock Pulse & Overall Vibration.

Monitoring Mobile Mining Equipment - Challenges & Solutions

Monitoring Mobile Mining Equipment - Challenges & Solutions

The RELIABILITY Conference - 42:59
by Ron Newman, PRUFTECHNIK Canada

Vibration measurement has come of age in the last 20 years. While the practice of continuous on-line monitoring of critical machines in the oil, gas, and petrochemical industries has been commonplace for several decades, it is only recently that companies who had been using intermittent data collection techniques are now embracing continuous monitoring. The benefits are substantial! The new “horizon” is mobile equipment … draglines, shovels, bucket-wheel excavators, stacker-reclaimers, heavy haul trucks, are all equally important to production and just as “critical” as a gas compressor. However, unlike stationary machinery, monitoring mobile equipment brings substantial challenges that must be addressed to ensure accurate, repeatable, and reliable data acquisition. Rapid speed and load variations are just one element of the application. The logistics of sensor mounting, cabling, network communications, and general serviceability, bring unique complications to the task of monitoring these machines. We will discuss these obstacles and present new solutions that have the potential to bring significant reliability improvements to large mobile equipment.

The Challenges in Implementing Asset Management

The Challenges in Implementing Asset Management

The RELIABILITY Conference Asset Management Forum - 41:45
by Dharmen Dhaliah- Manager Asset Management, City of Toronto

In the last few years, we have seen the emergence of Asset Management in many industries from the private to the public sector. Many organizations have been successful in getting started with Asset Management and embracing the new paradigm shift. The use of PAS55 and more the recently the availability of ISO 55000 suites have further ramped up the momentum of Asset Management on the global stage. It has become the trending topic in the industry and has created a sort of shakeout similar to what reliability did years ago.

Without doubt organizations fully understand the importance of asset management and the benefits they can gain from it. There is no question that organizations are willing to shift gear and implement asset management. The major stumbling block is finding the right organizational approach. We are witnessing lots of organizations stuttering and getting confused when it comes to embracing and implementing Asset Management.

Questions such as:

"How should I structure my organization to fit in Asset Management?"

"How will that impact the other functional areas?"

"How will they all coexist and interact with each other?"

"What should be done to manage that paradigm shift?”

Most importantly, “Are we not already practicing asset management?”

Acoustic lubrication is the method of using a bearing’s ultrasound signal to determine if a bearing requires lubrication or if the lubrication is sufficient. An under lubricated bearing will generate a greater signal than a properly lubricated bearing. This presentation presents the new Acoustic Lubrication Guidelines for Rolling Element Bearings in Electric Motors developed by the Association of Asset Management Professionals.

The Future of Asset Condition Monitoring Management

The Future of Asset Condition Monitoring Management

The RELIABILITY Conference Uptime Elements Forum – 44:08
by Jack Nicholas, Author

There is 4th paradigm shift developing in the way organizations handle Asset Condition Monitoring (ACM) (formerly called Predictive Maintenance – PdM – before the ISO 55000 series Asset Management standards were issued in 2014. This shift follows previous major changes in ACM/PdM programs: the first, when equipment went from heavy, cart-transportable packages for data collection and some analysis (1980’s) to microprocessor-based hand-held packages; and the second, when field-portable laptop computers and desktop personal computers with robust software programs and substantial memory capacity came into use (1990’s). Together they transformed collection, storage and analysis of data for asset condition monitoring and prediction. The third shift began with the application of wireless technology to condition data collection and the introduction of highly sophisticated analysis software programs and integration of data from multiple technologies for management, reporting and focusing of maintenance actions on improving asset performance and availability. The latest (fourth) shift involves use of the internet of things (IoT), cloud computing, ‘Big Data’ management, analytics and communications using tablet computers and cellular fourth generation (4G and in a few years 5G) long term evolution (LTE) technology.

This presentation will project into the future to show where ACM/PdM is headed. It builds on a previous prognosis published in 2007 that has proven about 75% correct after almost 10 years.

Actual examples of achievements of leading practitioners, suppliers and organizations in the field of ACM/PdM will be presented to show what the path forward looks like as of 2016 for the next 6 to 7 years.

Optimizing Your PM Program

Optimizing Your PM Program

The RELIABILITY Conference - 33:38
by Steve Turner, Nexus Global

In this session we will present two PM Optimization case studies in detail and results from several other asset intensive industries. One case study will be from a green field power generation station and the other from a water utility that had a mix of new and very old assets. In both cases it was found that the vendor recommendations needed significant adjustment to suit site and operational conditions. Remembering that “not one size fits all” is the same line of logic required when rationalizing your asset strategies. PM Optimization is the process to achieve the highest potential asset uptime and the most cost effective with a result delivered to the bottom line in 1/6 of the time.

Audit it. Improve it! Processes and KPIs for a Successful Condition Monitoring Program- Part 2

Audit it. Improve it! Processes and KPIs for a Successful Condition Monitoring Program- Part 2

The RELIABILITY Conference Workshop - 1.21:26
by Alan Friedman, Author

Sometimes people go to work and do their jobs taking measurements and writing reports, often with great care and skill. Their reports and recommendations then travel into a deep abyss from which they never return and are never heard from again. Sound familiar? This situation is unfortunately a common one in the condition-monitoring world. Machine condition reports are generated to help the planners plan but the planners never look at the reports. They might not know how to interpret them or they may simply choose to ignore them. A healthy machine might be replaced on a PM schedule even though there is nothing wrong with it. A machine might failure catastrophically even though there was plenty of evidence was available to predict the impending failure.

It is important to be certain that reports reach the people who need them and that the reports are understood, valued and utilized. This comes under the “right reporting” component of a successful program. What is also needed is a process of follow up and review to verify the reports are accurate and the program is providing the benefits it should. In this sense, “right follow up and review” is directly linked to “right goals.” This is the part of the process where you determine if your goals are being met. If they are not, then make appropriate changes to the program to evolve it or improve it.

This short course will also discuss KPI’s to measure to insure you are getting the most from your vibration monitoring or CM program.
