While conventional wisdom would hold that oil and water don't mix, in reality, they do! Even clean, dry oil can hold minute amounts of water in the dissolved phase. Dissolved water can be thought about in the same terms as water vapor in the atmosphere.

The methods by which lubricants are stored transferred and applied to machines play a large role in the success of a contamination control program. After all, if you start out with contaminated oil, you will not likely achieve cleanliness targets for machinery. Developing and implementing a world-class contamination control program is a sizable undertaking, and it usually requires significant modifications to machinery as well as changes in procedures and methodologies which can take years. However, there is one component of contamination control where you can affect the entire plant, and that component is the storage, handling and application of new lubricants. Because storage and handling affects the cleanliness of all lubricated machinery , it is usually a good place to start improving your program.
Attend this web workshop to learn:
1) New oil is not clean. It must be filtered before use.
2) World class storage and handling methods are not necessarily expensive.
3) Good contamination control practices require good storage and handling.
Funnels are a source of contamination which should be eliminated if at all possible. If funnels are not stored in a dust free environment and cleaned properly before use, all sorts of debris
In servicing electric motor bearings, it is important that the right grease be applied in the right quantity. Download this Techni-Tips file for detailed instructions.
Bonita Springs, Fla. - Trico Corporation launches new online lubrication self assessment at ReliabilityWeb.com’s annual conference Solutions 2.0 in Bonita Springs, Florida.
In the past decade I have played a role in implementing dozens of lubrication programs all across North America. Though the facilities themselves differ, the fundamental elements of what makes a good lubrication program great remain the same. It's not enough to simply say that we want to apply lubrication best practice; the goal needs to be adopting best practice and making it the company's preferred practice based on the unique conditions in which the plant operates. Some of these conditions may be environmental extremes, production extremes, labor issues, skill issues, financial limitations . . . the list goes on. A good machinery lubrication program tries to apply lubrication best practice. A great machinery lubrication program takes best practice and creates a change in corporate culture through training, proper storage and handling, discrete procedures, and minor modifications. These fundamental elements will take you from good to great.
"As many as 60 to 80 percent of all bearing failures (catastrophic, functional and premature) are lubrication related, whether it's poor lubricant selection, poor application, lubricant contamination or lubricant degradation." - Mark Barnes, Des-Case Corporation
When machines are set in place, aligned, and buttoned-down, it becomes too easy to forget about the gear couplings that may be used to transmit power between the machines. Gear couplings are
Equipment modifications are a key component of transforming a lubrication program from one that is average to one that is truly world-class. Many of the best practice methods for lubricating,
Many plants currently use galvanized tin oil containers, plastic jugs, watering or coffee cans and even soap or bleach bottles as portable transfer containers. Having an open top on any oil
Safe storage for your oil and lubricants is important Items stored should be in a separate, dedicated, locking steel storage shed to store all the flammables. The storage shed considered should:
Be a separate building away from the main building
Controlled by the storeroom with inventories managed
Before choosing the appropriate filter element for a filter cart, you must determine the target cleanliness for your applications. In general, you should select a filter element pore size
SKF has agreed to acquire US based lubrication systems provider Lincoln Holdings Enterprises, Inc. for USD 1 billion on a cash and debt free basis from Harbour Group, a privately owned operating company based in St Louis, Missouri, USA. The transaction is subject to relevant regulatory approvals.
SHANGHAI, PRNewswire/—Mr. Frank Magnotti, the CEO of Fluitec, a rapidly growing Cleantech company that increases the availability and reliability of industrial rotating equipment through condition monitoring and contamination control, was selected to be a chair and keynote speaker at the prestigious China Smart Grid Conference in Shanghai on November 8-10. The event brings together industry leaders and visionaries whose knowledge will shape China’s Smart Grid strategies.
At the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS), the oil sampling and analysis program has evolved since its inception during the plants start-up in the early 80's. The program has used on-going aggressive improvement plans and program audits, while implementing many of industry's best practices. As a result, progress reports show low equipment failures, increased awareness of Pro-active Maintenance initiatives, and station support from the craft level to executive level management.
Lubricant contamination is one of the leading causes for machine failure, and contamination can begin before the lubricant enters the machine. Consider how your company handles bulk lubricants.

Reducing energy consumption can lead to enhanced profits, lower emissions and the conservation of natural resources. As the largest consumer of energy, industry offers the greatest potential for reductions. This presentation makes the case for measuring, monitoring and minimizing energy usage by adopting lubrication reliability best practices.
In the past decade the filter cart has gone from being a specialty item to being a standard lubrication tool for maintenance professionals. As organizations place more and more emphasis on

In 2009, Trico Services was contracted to complete an equipment lubrication audit of a large mill in the southeast that produces liner and corrugated material for containers. This audit was for roughly 2500 pieces of rotating equipment. Upon completion of the audit, Trico was to take the lubrication recommendations and input this data into the MAINTelligence software platform that the facility uses using to manage their plant lubrication programs.
