Leveraging the IIoT by Monitoring Critical Machinery and Bearing Fault Detection

IMC-2017 Focused Forum - 39:31
by Craig Truempi and Dan Yarmoluk, ATEK Technologies

The Internet of Things has become an abstract discussion of billions of connected devices and information streaming to make data-driven decisions. Broadly speaking, this topic is how to transform your business through an efficiency analysis, increasing the level of automation, potentially adding another revenue stream or new business model to personalized or customized products and services. An IoT enabled solution in connected manufacturing includes connectivity, intelligence, pattern analysis and ultimately, predictability. Predictive maintenance should be seen as predictive algorithms to extend the life of the machine akin to a doctor-patient relationship and lifetime extension. In assessing a patient, we have to look at the holistic view of health as we would with IoT, the true value will lie in an integrated end-to-end on the manufacturing floor and each connected component has a incremental IoT value. IoT or connected manufacturing is literally "connecting" Operational Technology (OT) and Informational Technology (IT), meaning production and core business processes have end-to-end visibility or what is known as visibility from the shop floor to the top floor. This presentation will focus on the first step of connecting a broader visibility from the operator to the maintenance technician and top floor and mapping this information back to its core business processes in order to increase efficiencies and reliability.

The Role of “Large Data:” Automated Analysis and Analytics in Machine Condition Monitoring

The Role of “Large Data:” Automated Analysis and Analytics in Machine Condition Monitoring

IMC-2017 Learning Session - 45:24
by Milton Olsen, Maintenance Technology Systems, LLC.

Large data analytics is the process of examining large and varied data sets -- i.e., big data -- to uncover hidden patterns, unknown correlations, failure patterns, machinery health metrics and other useful information that can help maintenance organizations make more-informed business decisions.

Vibration data collection methods and database strategies to maintain large complete data sets will be discussed. The process that allows the post analysis of the data to occur “as if you are at the machine”. The ability to let the data lead you through the analysis process. Apply different data filters, and see the results during the analysis process. Do this same analysis on historical data, while seeking answers to the question of what has changed.

Explore the possibilities of Data analytics through the three types of vibration data collection processes. Periodic data collection, semi continuous data collection and continuously acquired data.

The goal of Large data analytics is the ability to perform analysis in the current data and previous data sets to identify the point at which machine failure began. The Large Data model necessitates the ability to analyze previous data with the same focus as the current data. The focus of the analysis will shift from simply answering the question of when the machine will fail, to the question of what caused or why or how did the machine begin to fail. This effort and process will naturally lead to identifying the real root cause of failure. From this vantage point repairs and corrections can be implemented that will increase the long term reliability of the machine.

Machine learning and artificial intelligence is progressing at a rapid pace. According the Bureau of Labor Statistics, over 60% of maintenance tasks will be "machine" assisted by 2022. Join industry thought leaders at IMC-2017 for a vibrant panel discussion about human machine collaboration to advance reliability and asset management.

MindSphere IoT Platform

MindSphere IoT Platform

The RELIABILITY Conference Learning Session - 33:50
by Simon Davidoff, Siemens

The new Siemens Cloud for Industry – MindSphere opens up an ecosystem for OEMs, end customers, partners and Siemens. The ecosystem already offers a wide range of applications to increase plant efficiency and productivity, energy management applications, and maintenance and operation applications. MindSphere offers standard cloud connectivity for many Siemens devices such as drives, PLCs, etc. and open, available interfaces (APIs) to application developers. The built-in secure device-cloud communication offers maximum customer data protection. Safety and industrial security services are available for MindSphere applications, as well as for standard Siemens industrial products.

There are a number of compelling use cases that are helping manufacturers reach new levels of productivity and cost savings. Few companies, however, are tapping the real value of the data these systems are already measuring. With Data Analytics services, new transparency into the health of machines and systems is revealed in real-time. Machine failures can be predicted before they occur, and process deviations can be identified and corrected sooner to prevent quality or efficiency drop-off. The result: maintenance planning and service management both improve, and costs are reduced.

A discussion of the above and also how to identify, define and elaborate a use case in the field of reliability and maintenance through a series of logical steps is included.

Advances in IoT Asset ConditIon Monitoring - 24:48
by Bill Gillette, President & CEO, LogiLube LLC.

LogiLube has revolutionized Asset Condition Monitoring by incorporating IoT sensors to provide real-time monitoring of oil quality in mission critical compressor equipment used in natural gas gathering, processing and transmission. The SmartOil™ technology platform integrates edge-processed IoT sensor data with physical oil analysis lab results to determine remaining useful life (RUL) of engine/compressor lube oil. Applying a suite of predictive analytic algorithms provides ‘actionable information’ from which to take proactive maintenance, as well as avert potential catastrophic equipment failures.
