Future is now and production facilities around the world begin to see the speed of information sharing produced by Condition Based Monitoring as a desirable investment. Airborne/Structure borne ultrasound has been used for decades, in bearing failure detection but now with ISO 29821-1 in our hands and the possibility of making a smart diagnosis and trending in cloud-based platform things change for good for practitioners. Baseline establishments, route compliance, asset diagnosis, speed as a technological advantage, and information sharing through all the organization, are now things to consider when implementing this technology in our maintenance strategy. Smart Data collection and resultant information management will become a must do for every company looking for boosting their availability and reliability indicators. A&SB Ultrasound combined with a cloud-based CBM platform will do the job for you.
Ismaning, October 16, 2018 – Together with the update of the SONOCHEK apps SONOLEVEL and SONOLEAK, PRUFTECHNIK launches the SONOLEVEL DATAVIEWER, a new visualization PC-software for leak analysis. SONOCHEK is an innovative digital leak inspection device used to localize leaks in compressed air, gas and vacuum systems. The device includes automatic leak classification and its broad bandwidth of 20 to 100 kHz allows detecting leaks even at an early stage. SONOCHEK is also used effectively for electrical inspection and monitoring of bearing lubrication.
Detecting errors before they occur - that’s the objective of preventive maintenance. The HANNOVER MESSE will be addressing the topic of “Predictive Maintenance” with a dedicated exhibition area, where SONOTEC will be demonstrating how companies can save energy and improve the efficiency of the entire production cycle using SONAPHONE technology. From April 23 to 27, 2018, the ultrasound specialist will be presenting the new broadband parabolic sensor BS30 for the SONAPHONE digital ultrasonic testing device for the very first time, as part of the special exhibition in Hall 22.

IRISS and SONOTEC have now announced that IRISS will be the Master Distributor for SONOTEC handheld ultrasound equipment for North America, South America (excluding Brazil) and the Caribbean. In addition, IRISS will provide calibration and repair services on SONOTEC products in the region.
In Part I (Oct/Nov 2017 Uptime), the focus was about the use of ultrasound and SAFETY. Hopefully, it spurred a discussion in your facility as to how this technology, no matter its age or origin, can be a lifesaver. This technology can truthfully claim that it has been around longer than any of you have been alive. Yet, it is still a most valuable technology in many, many ways.
Part II focuses on ultrasound for reliability maintenance and presents real-life situations as to why electrical workers and infrared thermographers should use ultrasound as a complementary technology.
IRISS is the global leader in Electrical Maintenance Safety Devices (EMSD) and Condition Based Monitoring Solutions for electrical equipment. We help our customers reduce downtime related costs and maximize efficiency by reducing CBM inspection times.
All through the late 1980s and 1990s, ultrasound was literally the all-purpose tool. Vibration and infrared (IR) were too expensive for most organizations to afford. Yet, you could purchase an infrared thermometer gun for $100 and an ultrasound instrument kit for between $750 and $7,000 and perform a multitude of applications on motor bearings, gear boxes, pumps for cavitation, leak detection (pressure/vacuum), steam traps and acoustic lubrication (introduced in early 1990s). You could hook up an ultrasound instrument to a vibration analyzer and utilize the contact or magnetic sensor on bearings to easily detect an outer race defect, sometimes missed by earlier vibration boxes unable to go above 20,000 Hz. Into the mid-1990s, ultrasound inspectors added electrical switchgear and substation inspection for arcing, tracking and corona discharge. A new era of ultrasound inspection had begun, dealing with SAFETY.
Acoustic lubrication has taken off with afterburners lit (old aviation phrase). During the 2017 RELIABILITY Conference™ hosted by Reliabilityweb.com®, several representatives from various organizations remarked at how well their acoustic lubrication program had made such a difference. As an example, the cost savings by way of reduced man-hours using time-based lubrication and the amount of grease not purchased are two reasons.
IRISS, the global leader in Electrical Maintenance Safety Devices and Solutions has expanded the course offerings through their Safety and Maintenance Academy of Reliability Technologies, SMART.
Since designing the world’s first industrial grade infrared windows IRISS has designed and patented multiple systems that allow almost every industry to conduct essential condition based maintenance tasks safely and effectively. IRISS, the leading manufacturer in Electrical Safety Maintenance Devices and Solutions, announces the Sonus XT.
Most electrical cabinets are not hermetically sealed. Scan your ultrasound detector around the panel sides and vent holes to detect discharges like arcing, tracking, and corona.
Not all electrical discharge faults produce heat. Use ultrasound to hear what your infrared camera cannot see.
Electrical discharge activity is amplified by high humidity. When performing
When monitoring your bearing lubrication with ultrasound, it is important to watch for very high values in your condition indicators ( total RMS and Peak values ). After applying grease, both values should decrease proportionately. This is a sign the bearing was under-lubricated. If the total RMS value lowers and the peak value stays relatively the same, then the bearing has a mechanical condition that is generating impacts.
Literally, tips are for focusing. You may be used to taking the rubber cones (six-inch cone or the smaller 1.5”-2”) to locate air leaks. You should only use the cones when you are trying to

The measurement of ultrasound with portable devices to provide an objective assessment of the health of a bearing has been well-documented over the last decade. In more recent times, the interconnection between a grease gun and an ultrasound instrument has taken this process one stage further. This presentation reports on a further evolution - the use of an on-line monitoring system using contact ultrasound sensors to provide a continuous indication of the frictional state and early failure state of rolling element bearings.Case histories showing how this technology can be combined with remote lubrication of difficult-access bearings to provide instant feedback on the benefit or otherwise of individual shots of grease.
